I’m never going to be on Facebook or Twitter or Instagram or any of it ever again. Social media is so fucking toxic. It’s anything but “social.” It’s such a passive form of communication. Social media is full of dumb selfies and embarrassing baby photos and typo-ridden status updates and misinformed opinions. Because of limited word counts and probably limited brain capacity, social media posts are full of typos. There’s way too much oversharing on social media. I don’t give a shit about someone’s misinformed and ignorant opinion; I don’t give a shit about what someone ate for breakfast this morning. Everyone and their monkey’s uncle is on social media now. I don’t want to be Facebook friends with every freaking person I’ve ever met or am related to. Social media is all about hyperbole and sensationalism. People online can hide behind anonymity and harass people they dislike and call people nasty names and compare each other to Nazis. Social media has made politics more extreme and less civil. There’s no hope of finding a middle ground or reaching a consensus or making a compromise anymore. Social media has helped fuel the rise of identity politics. People are willingly putting themselves into narrow categories and alienating and dehumanizing anyone who’s different. Social media is making people so self-involved. Selfies are so arrogant and narcissistic. FB and Twitter and Tumblr and Instagram and all the rest have taught me a valuable lesson: People suck, especially online.

  1. So make it your mission in life to be a better form of social media life. Don’t take selfies, don’t post inane updates. Mediate differences, inform people with facts rather than opinions. And don’t be negative. It’s possible to do, but you have to be diligent. And not succumb to the temptation to be witty or sarcastic or ironic. Unlike the first two comments here.

  2. Like here, stupid comments=likes.
    I have cancer, and I’m dying=100 likes.
Anyone want to see a movie?=30 likes.
    Can you get some attention?
Can you ask a question, and I’ll ignore it.

I’m not friends with anyone in life or Facebook I don’t want to be. I see a lot of support and encouragement from those people.

I wouldn’t be friends with any of these people. Unless you’re a Panda

  3. I/anonie, how many years were you on social media sites before you came to this briliant conclusion?
Were you one of those people that got caught up in all the toxic fallout? I thought so. Yes of course you are right.
Now what about the wee ones learning on their iPads in nursery school?
