I’d invite anyone who spotted the burial of negative news in Portland over the last two days to email me. First up, Police Chief Rosie Sizer is suggesting a “consolidation” of police precincts to eliminate North Precinct (this came up two years ago, and was hugely controversial at the time, until Potter pulled back on the idea), and Southeast Precinct, saving 5% on the bureau’s budget next year:

“By reducing 34 command-level police and administrative staff needed to run North and Southeast precincts, Sizer expects to save an estimated $2.8 million. The bureau would lose two commanders, four lieutenants, eight sergeants, four detectives, six neighborhood response team officers and other administrative support positions. Sizer expects to reassign 21 more officers to street patrol.”

Police Commissioner Dan Saltzman, according to the Oregonian, has been at the beach all week.
