Deadline broke the news that James Cameron has announced the next three Avatar movies:

The three pictures will be filmed simultaneously with production beginning next year. The release of the first sequel will be in December 2016, with the second to follow in December 2017, and the third a year later.

Everyone online is scoffing over this news, but that’s just because it’s easy to forget that James Cameron has been scoffed at before. I’m not saying these movies are a sure bet to be successful—it’s Cameron’s craziest idea yet, and eventually gravity has to catch up to you—but nobody remembers all the critics and industry insiders who predicted that Titanic and Avatar would be utter failures. Because they were completely wrong.

  1. “craziest idea yet” = following up the highest grossing film of all time with a few sequels…

(because multiple sequels to extremely high-grossing films rarely do well, except in the case of Twilight, LOTR, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park, Transformers, Iron Man, Star Wars, Spider-Man, etc.)

(and because shooting sequels back-to-back/simultaneously has never been successfully pulled off, except in the case of Twilight, LOTR, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc.)
