Here are two bits of totally unrelated film news. I’m going to put them together into one blog post because I am lazy.

So first, the tagline “His dreams inspired the world” might not be that greatโ€””His dreams first inspired the world, then creeped the world out” would be more accurateโ€”but following its premiere at MTV’s VMA Awards, the trailer for the shameless cash-in flick Michael Jackson’s This Is It is now online.

Someday, someone will make a hell of a documentary about Jackson’s crazy-ass life, but I suspect the Gilmore Girls/High School Musical dude isn’t gonna be the guy who does it. This looks sappy and exploitative and cash-grabby. I will still see it. So will you. So will everyone.

In less-depressing news:

Christoph Waltzโ€”who was fucking awesome in Inglourious Basterds as the eeevil Nazi Col. Hans Landaโ€”has taken over for Nicolas Cage in Michel Gondry’s Green Hornet, which stars Seth Rogen. This is fantastic. Gondry directing a movie about a superhero no one knows or cares about? Seth Rogen? Col. Hans Landa? Ten tickets, please.

With honor and distinction, Erik Henriksen served as the executive editor of the Portland Mercury from 2004 to 2020. He can now be found at henriksenactual.com.
