As we wrote late last month, former Malheur Wildlife Refuge militia member (or “terrorist” if you want to put a finer point on it) Ammon Bundy has shown up again in the news for doing something almost as dangerously misguided: He has been organizing public gatherings to protest Idaho’s social distancing orders, and now? He’s planning on getting “hundreds of people” together for a religious service this Easter Sunday.
Bundy told CNN that he is planning to hold the large gathering in an undisclosed location, in open defiance of state orders and scientific evidence that COVID-19 is highly contagious and has led to the deaths of more than 16,000 people across the country.
“Our goal is to get enough people together and secure our rights… we are not trying to provoke, we want people to be able to worship,” Bundy said in a phone interview.
But endangering the lives of hundreds of others apparently isn’t enough for Bundy, as he went on to say:
“I actually want the virus,” he said. “I’m healthy, my family is healthy. I’d rather have it now so my body is immune to it.”
Anyone who is stupid enough to “want” this virus should immediately watch this harrowing description from CNN anchor Chris Cuomo about how terrifying and dangerous it is to actually get COVID-19.
While Idaho Governor Brad Little has not publicly commented on Bundy’s violation of the state order, according to the New York Post, the Boise police is aware of the situation and monitoring it.
“Boise Police has not issued any citations or charges due to the governor’s order,” spokeswoman, Haley Williams, said.
“Officers have been focused on gaining voluntary compliance. As a last resort, if we are unable to do that, then we would refer the report to the prosecutor’s office for possible misdemeanor charges authorized by the governor’s order.”
In somewhat better news, Idaho’s social distancing efforts (along with those being practiced across the country) have been helping to flatten the curve, despite residents like Bundy and other conservatives across the nation who are actively making choices that put their fellow Americans in danger.
