Good morning, Portland! What burger will you be eating for lunch today?

Here are the headlines.

A Nobel Life: Prolific American author and 1993 Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison has died at 88. If you’ve never read Morrison’s seminal novels and short stories about the African American experienceโ€”well, now is as good a time as any to get started.

Burying the Lede: Trump is drawing ire for yesterday’s speech addressing the weekends’ mass shootings in Ohio and Texas. Not only did he confuse Dayton with Toledoโ€”he also failed to mention Latinos at all, despite the shooting in El Paso being clearly motivated by racism.

It’s Something? In the wake of that shooting in Dayton, Ohio’s governor is proposing a state law that would allow authorities to take away people’s weapons if they are deemed mentally unfit to own them. Because why be so daring as to ban assault rifles for everyone, when you can instead just exclude one segment of the population?

Stay Away: Some out-of-state alt-righters are planning an anti-antifa rally in downtown Portland on August 17, and Police Chief Danielle Outlaw is imploring people from all sides to stay away if they plan on using violence.

Speaking of Violence at Protests: A woman who was hit by a Portland police flash-bang grenade at a downtown protest last summer is suing the city for the emotional and physical damages she incurred. “Suddenly, I was overcome with a searing pain in my chest and arm and an intense burning sensation,” she says about being hit by the flash-bang.

Yikes:

Platforms Matter: 8chan, every white supremacist mass shooter’s racist internet message board of choice, was dropped by its web services company yesterday. Vancouver, Washington-based company Epik briefly came to 8chan’s unfortunate rescue, but the website is down as of now.

Sentence(s) of the Day:As if we need one another’s sweat to survive. We do.
