Good morning, Portland! Good news: We’re only about a month away from HUMP!, the finest amateur porn festival I’ve ever attended.

Here are the headlines.

Impeachment Update: Congressional Democrats plan to subpoena the White House for documents that could shed light on just how far Trump’s corruption and deception goes. “Over the past several weeks, the Committees tried several times to obtain voluntary compliance with our requests for documents,” said House Oversight Committee Chair Elijah Cummings, “but the White House has refused to engage with—or even respond to—the Committees.”

Busted:

Your Tax Dollars at Work: A stunning new New York Times story shows how very brave, totally ethical Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers embed themselves in communities and use big data to track down undocumented immigrants—even ones who don’t even meet ICE’s own standards for being a danger to the public. The Pacific Northwest is featured heavily in the story.

Vita Vice: Caffe Vita, a Seattle-based coffee shop chain with locations in Portland, is asking its employees to stop giving away old pastries and coffee dregs to homeless people. Because, you know, heaven forbid a bit of non-transactional human kindness occurs under the watchful eye of capitalism.

Under Pressure: A Multnomah County audit finds that new state policies and funding changes have put a big strain on the county’s Intellectual and Developmental Disability Services Division. The average caseload for division case managers recently jumped from 45 clients to 60.

Criminal, Justice: The white police officer who shot and killed an unarmed Black man in his own apartment last year has been given a 10-year prison sentence for murder.

Unmasked: Hong Kong’s government is considering banning facial masks as a way to quell the weeks-long protests over mainland China’s oppressive policies. Fun fact: The Portland police chief wants to ban face masks here, too.

The Offspring: An Oregon doctor who donated sperm while in med school is now suing OHSU. He says the hospital’s fertility clinic broke its promise that the sperm wouldn’t be given to Oregon parents, and that it would only be used five times. He’s found 17 biological children through Ancestry.com.

Buck Stops Here: Ed Buck, the toxic LA-based Democratic donor who had an alleged habit of drugging young Black men with meth before sexually assaulting them, has been indicted for causing two of those men to overdose and die in his apartment. It took two deaths and one near-death for Buck, a powerful man in political circles, to be arrested.
