THURSDAY, July 24

MUSIC--Singer Diego Garcia brings a detached, gothy aspect to his band Elefant with his deep vocals. Paired with the swirling atmospherics of cymbals and keyboards, this is the music of a cinematic dream sequence. Plus, Menomena's beat-heavy nerd rock is reason to go alone. KS
w/The Silents; Berbati's Pan, 231 SW Ankeny, 1-800-325-SEAT, 9 pm, $8

MUSIC--Cum on feel the noize. Cum on! It's Quiet Riot for crying out loud. You know you love them. Classic rock is total summertime music, and since most classic rock stars choke on their vomit and die before they get this old, this is a rare, magical moment. MS
w/Last Empire & Bettie Ford; Dante's, 1 SW 3rd, 1-800- 325-SEAT, 9 pm, $15

FRIDAY, July 25

MUSIC--With sort of halting, but utterly confident vocals and some bitchin' guitar licks, Les Savy Fav is one of the more British-sounding East Coast rock bands I've heard. Is that a bad thing? 'Ell no! I luvs me some Limeys! Oh, and The Planet The are incredibly fun, too, if not as British. JWS
w/SPRCSS; Berbati's Pan, 231 SW Ankeny, 248-4579, 9:30 pm, $10

MUSIC--The family that plays together, stays together. And the family that features a talented nine-year-old girl on drums, and sings songs inspired by campy retro slides is the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. The Trachtenburgs have not only developed a great gimmick, but they are also adept at writing silly tunes that are incredibly catchy. Plus, the family has a reputation of making baked goods for entire audiences! SL

FILM--If you've been attending Produce Row's outside film fest, you'll know they're hella fun. This week it's the hee-lariously bizarro How to Get Ahead in Advertising. This 1989 cult sleeper stars Richard E. Grant as a creatively blocked young ad exec who grows a talking boil on his neck! Get there early... people love talking boils. WSH

MONDAY, July 28

MUSIC--If they aren't driving like Jehu, or just plain screaming at the top of their lungs, the boys of Science of Yabra are putting on one insane live show. Music that is as damaging to your ears as placing your head in a jet's engine, and just about as sensible. Skeleton Coast are far less loud, but their precision punk with co-ed vocals and charming stage presence makes this a perfect evening to celebrate how loveable our local scene can be. CM
w/North Atlantic; Blackbird, 3728 NE Sandy, 282-9949, 9:30 pm, $5

TUESDAY, July 29

PUNK--Sure, The Misfits will never be the same without Glen Danzig, the most demented mo-fo this side of prison. But they're still playing those catchy, zany, driving songs of yore (with Jerry Only, Marky Ramone, and Dez from Black Flag) and bringing along some of the dirtiest punk alive. KS
w/The Damned, Agnostic Front, The Dickies, D.I., Balzac; Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W Burnside, 224-4400, 8 pm, $20-25

READING--After tackling the deadly heights of Mt. Everest, Jon Krakauer is now tackling an even more wily and dangerous topic: Mormon extremism! His Under The Banner of Heaven tells the chilling (and true) story about two remorseless murderers who believed God instructed them to kill. PB
First Congregational Church, 1126 SW Park Ave, 7:30 pm, free

Based on a true story, a pair of bandit brothers befriend a general they were originally trying to rob. However, rage and chop-socky revenge ensues when the general falls for one of the bandit's wives! Love, loyalty, betrayal and a whole lot of ass-whoopin'. WSH
