Before he shuffles away from the Mercury Art Director chair forever and starts his lucrative new career, our beloved Justin “Scrappers” Morrison built this incredible Blogtown Wheel of Fun for us to play with. We’ll use it to assign various challenges (as in Worst Night Ever), drunken dares, and maybe even a few contest winners […]
Ezra Ace Caraeff
Ezra Ace Caraeff is the former Music Editor for the Mercury, and spent nearly a third of his life working at the paper. More importantly, he is the owner of Olive, the Mercury’s unofficial office dog. His writing has appeared in The Fader, The Stranger, The Onion's A.V. Club, ESPN's TrueHoop network, and countless fanzines that are thankfully long out of print. He makes a mean tofu scramble and yes, Ace is really his middle name.
Starfucker – “Julius” Video
Following three consecutive sold out Portland shows, the boys of Starfucker are still riding high on the success of their Polyvinyl debut, Reptilians. In this brand new Jason Miller directed video for “Julius” (sadly, not filmed at the Orange Julius stand inside the Lloyd Center food court) the band dresses like druids while some young […]
See Stephen Malkmus, Eat Pancakes, and Do Something Good for Once in Your Life
Heaven is not a truck. Heaven is a stack of pancakes. As a professional music critic who confidently sits atop a pile of first edition Sun Ra LPs—it’s called brooding, and it makes the records more valuable, duh—I can say with great authority that last year’s Pavement reunion tour was lacking one key element: pancakes. […]
Look Your Best for Fin de Cinema
I like movies. I love music. I hate clothes. That’s why I usually wear this outfit when I head out to a film or a show. Holocene understands my pain (and this raging case of “barrel rot” I’ve come down with), that’s why for their May 12 Fin de Cinema screening of Michelangelo Antonioni’s modtastic […]
This Week’s Mercury Music Section
Hey Wanda Jackson, stay away from the creepy pale guy Another week, another Mercury music section to ignore while you watch Michelle Obama do the Dougie. Whatever, Rutherford B. Hayes’ crunktastic wife Lucy Webb Hayes did it first. We don’t need the Michael Jackson impersonator from the White Stripes to tell us about Wanda Jackson. […]
Blaze of Our Lives
For some reason the Mercury thought a reoccurring Blazers column would be a good idea.
Want to Hear Miley Cyrus Cover Nirvana? No? Too Bad.
This would have never happened if Bin Laden was still alive. h/t: Buzzfeed
End Hits Concert Challenge: Papa Roach at the Roseland
I lost a bet last week and had to attend a Papa Roach concert. Oh, in case you were curious, there was lots of fingering at this concert. Here is my VERY traumatizing review.
Berbati’s is Back
Well, this is welcome news. Months after we said our weepy farewells and they shuttered their concert space for good, Berbati’s (the venue) has returned. While the restaurant never went away, the former show room is back in action. The club is now a little smaller than in previous years (an expanded Voodoo Doughnuts is […]
Blazers vs. Mavericks – Hot Live (Playoff) Blog Action
Live from the Rose Garden as the Portland Trail Blazers take on the Dallas Mavericks in what could very well be the final game of the season for the home team. The Mavs have pushed the Blazers to the very brink of elimination and Portland now needs a win tonight to prolong this series, and […]
This Week’s Mercury Music Section
JAMES REXROAD Another week, another Mercury music section to read while you dine at Flava Flav’s chicken restaurant in Clinton, Iowa. What’s that? It closed? Is Professor Griff’s kosher restaurant still open? After years of playing in serious bands that unsuccessfully attempted to change the world, the men of Red Fang finally hit their stride […]
