Just to confirm my worst fears that it’s meth heads who are responsible for a lot of bike theft in town, the police sent out this press release about this morning’s big federal meth bust in Old Town:

Investigators from the Metro Gang Task Force arrested seven people in connection with this morning’s search warrant at the Hip Sing Association building in Downtown Portland’s Old Town neighborhood.

All seven people were booked into the Multnomah County Jail on state charges, unrelated felony warrants or parole violation detainers.

Investigators recovered more than two (2) ounces of methamphetamine, drug packaging materials, digital scales, ammunition, surveillance equipment, multiple weapons (not firearms), body armor and various stolen items including computers and dozens of bicycles.

Hundreds of bikes are stolen in the city every year. If yours gets nabbed, report it to the police. If they find it, your bike will probably wind up hanging in the epic halls of the police property warehouse, where you can go reclaim it.

  1. Worst fear? Bike thievery in Portland was rampant long before meth. I’d rather have my prime suspects be conspicuous tweakers, better chance of them getting busted and you getting your bike back.
