Dear SE Portland, please go fuck yourself. By an apparent stroke of luck I found a small room on the hip street Division last year. For months this summer there was constant noise of the house next door being remodeled. As the formerly pleasant roommate finally vacated her shit (two weeks after sheโ€™d stopped paying rent), the girlfriend and our newborn baby girl were able to move in. Hurray! The week after that, two more houses across the street began major remodeling. Itโ€™s going on 8 months of constant construction noise. The jack-hammering for 8 hours straight last week was especially pleasant. The city finally finished some of our sidewalks after other noisy machines hacked out gaping mud-holes at every corner on Clinton. The houses must almost be done, the sidewalk is somewhat usable, things are looking up! Yesterday, we got our no-cause 90 day eviction notice. The landlord wants to “update the kitchen” so that they can raise the rent by $600. This morning my car was stolen. Iโ€™m working on the country western song to sum all this up. Iโ€™ll just start packing things up with a smile and get the hell out of this shithole. Except, oh yeah, I donโ€™t have a car anymore and affordable rent no longer exists in Portland, and children need things like a home. Guess weโ€™ll just put everything we own on the street corner, wrap the baby up in a blanket, bicycle down to the homeless shelter and pray child welfare doesn’t take our daughter away.

  1. No sympathy for moving to Division last year and being surprised that there was construction or that new construction started.

Much sympathy for the eviction notice and having to find a new place to live.

  2. Agree with others… So you moved to Division last year to rent… Um, bad idea #1… Not trying to judge but… bad idea #2 = having kids before owning a home. I could only imagine how difficult it is to pay rent (not mortgage! in other words, you’re paying for someone’s retirement not yours!), provide for a child and try to save for a home…. I’m not sure why it’s so difficult to understand… Live cheaply, save and buy ANYTHING ASAP so you’re not paying rent. Or don’t be mad when it’s time to leave. The point of renting is having the opportunity to jump around but if you want to stay in one place then find a cheap ass place (Gresham) and SAVE!
