First things first: For more immediate updates on the state of things at the Occupy camp tonight and tomorrow morning, follow @theriaultpdx (that’s our news editor, Denis). If you can handle some unfiltered occupy (“So! You had a conversation with the cops about capitalism!”) check out the Occupy Portland livestream.

So far on Eviction Eve, it seems like Occupy is pretty cold, soggy, and conflict-free. The police did raid one tent in the parks, removing rocks they worried could be used as weapons. Denis reports:

Meanwhile, the scene is all about preparing for tomorrow. Several TV news crews have hired private security, while rumors are circulating that the National Guard is ready to provide reinforcements for the Portland police. Some people are planning a bike swarm to separate protesters from police, while others are planning a concert and potluck kumbaya, hoping hundreds of Portlanders will show up to the camp in the afternoon.

The main infrastructure of the camp are being packed up and moved out to storageโ€”by this time, the kitchen that was turning out three meals a day is basically gone. The camp’s PR team says plans have been set for decentralized locations where the protesters can disperse to and regroup after the eviction.

For now, it’s just a waiting game. Here’s the camp’s eviction notice, courtesy of Matt Bors:

Finally, PBS Newshour had a piece about how Occupy Portland fits in with “rising tensions” nationwide surrounding the protests.

  1. I was a little surprised how much attention Portland got when I was watching the Newshour last night – one of the best news shows out there.
Mark Shields and David Brooks discussion just after this segment was good too, about occupy.
While I am no fan of Adams, I thought he came across well, if a little nervous / shakey in his voice. (he has never addressed a national audience of this level before, right?)
Jim started out rather badly I thought – sounding like a politician refusing to answer questions asked of him and reading from his ‘core statement’ list. He got better as the segment went on though.

  2. No updates?
Hasn’t there been 2 more heoin OD’s since this segment on the Newshour appeared?
I saw pictures of those rocks — and yes, they were of very throwable size.
No National Guard either, from last I heard.

  3. I’d be very surprised if the cops make their move at 12:01. The bars are all still open, the city swarming with saturday night partiers.
    Doesn’t make sense.
If I were the cops, I’d wait till about 4 in the morning.

  4. PBS said our overdoses were fatal. I thought they were non-fatal. Did PBS get something wrong? How could that be??
I wish all news was like this. So calm and rational.

  5. Also that green screen backdrop of the skyline is really funny. Adams and Oliver are not hanging out at the Japanese Gardens talking to PBS.
